Grading notes for Alpha

Alpha cards have rounded corners (unique to Alpha printing) and are notoriously off-center. BGS is the preferred grader for MTG vintage — a BGS 9.5 typically outsells PSA 10 for Power 9. CGC 10 Pristine is gaining traction. Never crack an Alpha holder without a plan.

Alpha grading FAQ

How much is a Black Lotus Alpha?

Raw played Alpha Lotus is $50k–$100k. BGS 9.5 Alpha Lotus has traded $500k+. A BGS 10 Alpha Lotus sold for over $3M in 2024.

PSA or BGS for MTG?

BGS. MTG vintage collectors prefer BGS 9.5 Gem Mint and BGS 10 Black Label. PSA 10 exists but usually trades 20–40% under BGS 9.5 for the same card.
